A blend of mysticism and extraordinary nature

Mountain Rtanj is located on the northern edge of the Sokobanja valley. The legend of an extinct volcano, fireballs, as rare natural phenomena, pits, caves, steep peaks, endemic plants, stories about aliens and other mysteries attract a great number of mountaineers, nature lovers, scientists and adventurers.

A special challenge is the ascent to the top of Rtanj (Šiljak 1560 m), where the view reaches as far as to the mouth of the Sava into the Danube. One of the attractions that stands out is at the foot of Ranj, the glacier pit. It is 50 m deep, and it is located in the area of the village Mužinac. In 2019, Rtanj was declared a special nature reserve and placed under state protection.

There are the remains of the church/chapel of St. George on Šiljak, which was built by Greta Minh in 1935, in memory of her husband Julius Minh, the owner of the Rtanj mine.
