Near the village of Vrmdza (12 km from Sokobanja), in the valley of the river Pakles are the walls of the ancient town of Vrmdza. The locals say it is ‘Latin’ in origin.

The city dates back to Roman times. It was built between the 4th and 6th centuries, probably during the rule of Emperor Justinian. The city was later mentioned in the 14th century as the residence of the rulers. It was destroyed in the 15th century.
